AS CALISTA WALKED back into her house, the rain had already begun to fall more steadily. She closed the door, but when she turned, she found her grandmother in the living room. Grandma Josie was rocking slowly in her chair, her feet tapping on the floor. Calista was immediately stricken with guilt. She could tell by the pace of Grandma Josie’s foot taps that she was upset.

“I’m sorry,” Calista said. “I . . . I couldn’t keep it from him. It didn’t seem right.”

“It feels that way sometimes,” Grandma Josie said, her voice scratchy with age and exhaustion. “But that’s why I’ve always told you to keep your emotions out of it. You need to learn that there is a time and place. And right now, that boy is going to bring the entire town down to those marshes. She won’t like that.”

“I don’t care what Edwina likes,” Calista said. “I had a chance to save Parker. It couldn’t wait, Gran.”

Grandma Josie nodded like she understood the sentiment and kept on rocking. She didn’t say anything else, and Calista took that as her cue to leave. The thunder rumbled loudly outside, rattling the windows.

As she headed to her room, Calista first stopped by her mother’s room, easing the door open to peek in at Molly. Her sister looked a little gray, but otherwise, she was asleep under the covers, their mother’s arm wrapped around her. Molly looked restless, though. Calista wondered how long the aftereffects of possession lasted. Tomorrow, she was going to spoil Molly. Cookies and cartoons all day.

Calista closed the door and walked back to her room. Her father hadn’t spoken to her since she came inside, but like Grandma Josie, he probably knew that she had told Wyland about his brother. She wondered if he was disappointed in her, too.

After returning to her room, Calista got back into bed. In the distance, she heard police sirens. It made her stomach coil with anxiety, but she hoped they’d find Parker tonight. She even wondered if they would thank her—bring a little fame to the Wynn family. The kind people appreciate instead of disdain.

Calista picked up her phone and saw a message from her aunt Freya. She was scared to open it, afraid of what her aunt might say. She should have guessed that Freya would know what she had set into motion. She was, after all, a bit of a mind reader.

I’ll be there at 6 a.m. sharp, the text read. It’s already on the news.

Calista quickly clicked out of the message and opened an app to look at the local news. Sure enough, at the top of the page was a breaking report.

Tip leads investigators to the Meadowmere marshes in search of three missing boys.

Calista sat up in bed and tuned in to the live report. Olivia Ferrera was on the scene, police lights flashing behind her. She was under a tent and the sound of rain pouring down meant she had to speak louder to be heard over the noise.
